Hello, My name is Paul Hughes, I am writing to see if there are any members of 57 Squadron from about 1951 to 1953 who may remember my father, Edward (Ted) Hughes. He served his national service as an air frame mechanic on B29s, I remember him telling me he was stationed at Waddington and Coningsby. I don’t have any photos of him at that time but do have a couple of pictures of his aircraft. He recalled many tails of his RAF days to me when I was a lad, whether they are fact or poetic licence played a part I don’t know, but it sounded like he did enjoy his 3 years.
I recall him telling me he played football for the squadron team, on one occasion against Fred Trueman, and a story about a shooting competition which I have the certificate for somewhere. Also he was on the polishing duty for the Queen’s visit, he and his pals polished their aircraft from nose to tail.
Towards the end of his national service he was put on gardening duty as the squadron were swopping from Washingtons to Canberras, he told me of the many things he and his mates got up to to pass the time. I hope I’m not too late with this request, many thanks.
