It is with great sadness that the Association has learned of the passing of Len Manning who served as an Air Gunner on Lancasters with 57 Squadron. While on the raid against the Revigny railway yard on 18/19 July 1944, Len and his crew were shot down. With the help of the Resistance, Len evaded capture and rejoined with Allied troops on 7 September. Len had bravely battled against cancer in recent years, but was an ever-present at our Reunion memorial services. He passed away peacefully with family by his side on 1 September 2020. RIP Len

I particularly recall that, at the formal Dining-In Night (DIN) with 57 Squadron at RAFC Cranwell in 2018, Len agreed to be the Association’s guest speaker.
He spoke with humour and feeling, and the ovation he received from all the attendees at the DIN reflected the respect felt by all towards Len.
The day after the DIN Len was invited to accompany Squadron Leader Mike Waring, Officer Commanding 57 Squadron, to sign RAFC Cranwell’s ‘Wall of Honour’ – a rare honour, but thoroughly deserved for a true hero.
3 September 2020 at 11:50 #44795Tony GunbyKeymasterThat is very sad news Tony that one of our few has passed. RIP Len.
Whilst reading your tribute I took a quick look at my Dad’s log book and on 19th July 1944 Robert Gordon Winter flew his first sortie in DX “T” LM.579 as a MU Gunner to Thiverny Supply Dump and may have bumped in to Len, now they can have a catch up

9 September 2020 at 15:06 #44798David HoughtonParticipantLen’s funeral will be held at Bury St Edmund’s Crematorium on 17 September 2020.
Unfortunately, Covid-19 restrictions mean that only invited family and friends can attend Len’s farewell in person.
However, others can join the ceremony virtually, using the details contained in the image below.

17 September 2020 at 17:45 #44801David HoughtonParticipantOn 17 September 2020 Len’s friends and family came together to say ‘farewell’ to a wonderful man. I was fortunate enough to be invited to attend and represent the Association.
Len chose a simple, civil funeral – a moving but happy occasion as we remembered Len and celebrated his life.
