In the early 1930’s, the RAF was in the process of recovering some of the strength it had lost following the disbandment of numerous squadrons after WWI. 57 Squadron was one of the Units which was re-formed in 1931 at RAF Netheravon (operating the Hawker Hart), before moving to RAF Upper Heyford in September 1932. Of course, like any RAF squadron, 57 Squadron needed administrative support, and Maurice Stretton served as a Squadron Clerk with 57 Squadron from 1933-1937 (and era that included the transition from the Hawker Hart to the Hawker Hind).
In 1978, Maurice took part in an interview, where some thoughts about his time in the RAF, finishing his apprenticeship, joining 57 Squadron in 1933, and subsequently serving at the RAF Headquarters in Hinaidi, Iraq, were recorded for posterity. That interview can be heard by simply clicking here
