The Association has recently been contacted by Martin Wade, a journalist working for the South Wales Argus, who is writing a feature on Royal Flying Corps airmen from Monmouthshire. His investigations have so far unearthed a man from the county who served with 57 Squadron. Second Lieutenant James Graham Glendinning was an observer with the Squadron flying Rolls Royce-engined DH4s in the long-rang reconnaissance, bombing and photography roles. He has killed on 2 December 1917 over Belgium when his aircraft was shot down.
The dates would make 2nd Lt Glendining one of the Squadron’s earliest aircrew and elsewhere on the website under the 57 Squadron Gallery & Archive pages for 1916-1918, there is a photo taken in November 1917 of the Squadron marking the handover of the Squadron from its first Commanding Officer, Major Sir L A Pattinson MC hands, to Major C A A Hiatt MC. Is Glendinning pictured here I wonder?

If anyone has any information about James Glendinning or any other RFC airmen from Monmouthshire, Martin would be delighted to hear from you. You can either post directly to this Forum or contact me and I will connect you with Martin.
