Memories of Sqn Ldr Peter Huggins – 57 Sqn 1942-1943

The years 1942-1943 were a time of great change for 57 Squadron, as it re-equipped from the Wellington to the Lancaster (via the Manchester) and moved from RAF Feltwell, to RAF Scampton and then to RAF East Kirkby. Squadron Leader Peter Huggins had originally been an RAF pilot instructor, before joining 57 Squadron in 1942. He later served with 12 Squadron.

In 1993, Peter took part in an interview, where some thoughts about his time in the RAF were recorded for posterity.  This recording begins with Peter’s reflections about his early flying days at Brooklands, the outbreak of World War II and his time a flying instructor in 1939-41 with Training Command.  Peter moves on to recall his time on operations with 57 Squadron, and his subsequent move to the Wellington bomber and participation in the first 1000 bomber raids.   The interview can be heard by simply clicking here    There is a short delay before this recording begins – so please be patient!
