Memories of Stanley Barraclough – 57 Sqn 1941

Stanley served as a Wellington wireless operator with 57 Squadron, joining the squadron on 21 September 1941, and was shot down and captured just 3 months later on 27 December 1941 over The Netherlands.  Arrested by Dutch police on 28 December 1941, Stanley was subsequently held captive as a PoW by the Germans in various camps until his liberation from Stalag III A at Luckenwalde in May 1945.  In 1997, Stanley took part in an interview, where some thoughts about his time in the RAF were recorded for posterity.  The recording begins with reflections on Stanley’s childhood memories and his enlistment in July 1940.  His story moves on to cover training as a wireless operator and subsequently joining 57 Squadron, before recalling events of that fateful night in December 1941 during a raid on Dusseldorf.  The interview can be heard by clicking here
