The Association was represented at Jim’s funeral on Monday by myself and David Houghton. A number of veterans organisations were also represented as was the Chief of the Air Staff. Jim’s son, Neil, gave a moving Tribute to his Dad and a bugler from the RAF Central Band played the Last Post during the Committal.
RAFA has published this tribute to Eric on their website
The Bournemouth Echo today published this article on the passing of Eric.
I shall be representing the Association at Eric’s funeral, which will also be attended by RAFA representatives and a contingent from 57 Squadron.

Len’s family have asked for family flowers only, but should you wish, they would welcome any donations in his memory to St Nicholas Hospice
I’m sure that would have plenty of memories to share Howard.
Hello again Matt
I have just taken a look at the digital archives held by the International Bomber Command Centre which contains the following record which I believe is your relative:
Hello Matt
Many thanks for your message. Have you taken a look at our Research page – this provides information on a range of information sources which may be helpful in your research. Finding a photo is quite unlikely but not impossible and your post on our website may prove fruitful.
If you would like to complete and submit a Research Enquiry via our website which is at the bottom of our Research page here our Information Officer may also be able to provide information about your relative’s service with 57 Squadron. Please provide as much detail as possible – if you have Date of Birth, Service Number, Crew Position, date of the crash etc it will help refine the search.
Good luck and best wishes
Webmaster
David

Best wishes and stay safe

We have been unable to find any reference to Corporal Dodd’s death in the Squadron’s Operational Records. As a corporal he would not have been aircrew but rather a member of the Squadron’s ground personnel which included a very wide range of trades. It is possible that he may have been an aircraft technician, but he could equally have had a different trade specialisation. In its online records, the International Bomber Command Centre lists his trade as ‘Uncertain’, you can see the record here
It is unclear whether Corporal Dodd died as a result of injuries sustained in some kind of accident, or as a result of illness; RAF Hospital Ely would have treated patients with conditions resulting from either. A search for his death certificate may provide further insight into the cause of death. You can obtain a copy of the death certificate by using the online service provided by the Government’s General Register Office; further details are here. By registering to use the service, you can search the GRO’s database which has an entry for John Desmond Dodd – GRO Reference: 1941 J Quarter in ELY Volume 03B Page 1224. You can order a copy online; there is a £11 fee.
I am sorry that we have not been able to determine the cause of Corporal Dodd’s death or any other background, but thank you for your interest in 57 Squadron and wish you well with your further research.
